I’d think it acts as a buffer and regulates how much moisture is lost as opposed to being left bare. I know it helps me gauge during the grow when the ladies really start drinking as the sand would dry and change a lighter color when dried. I guess it depends on how moist/wet it is, your call.I also store my cooking dirt covered with sand.Checked it last night the sand was quite moist its been wicking the water out.Thoughts on replacing it to let it dry out?Its been there for approx 5 weeks.
Thanks, soil was still moist so ill leave it for now.I’d think it acts as a buffer and regulates how much moisture is lost as opposed to being left bare. This is purely anecdotal, but I have found that my plants respond a little better when I allow the reservoir to run dry versus having a constant supply of water. Then again, this works great until you go out of town for a week...I'm using a very similar setup except that I don't have that pipe. Instead I have a "fill reservoir" attached to the main rez via 1" pvc with a float valve. Working great so far. Went on an 11 day road trip and the ladies were perfect when I got back. I'm hoping roots don't clog it... we'll see.
They do the job, could use a little more heat though.I vent outside for smell so heat doesn't stick around long.Ayyyyyyy another mars guy I love it!!!
