I also store my cooking dirt covered with sand.Checked it last night the sand was quite moist its been wicking the water out.Thoughts on replacing it to let it dry out?Its been there for approx 5 weeks.
I’d think it acts as a buffer and regulates how much moisture is lost as opposed to being left bare. I know it helps me gauge during the grow when the ladies really start drinking as the sand would dry and change a lighter color when dried. I guess it depends on how moist/wet it is, your call.

Like the mini-sips, I'm running something similar right now in size. In my larger (original) SIPs I was using Brute totes (which are excellent I might add and they are food grade) where to get a seal around mine I used foam pipe insulation and then I got a nice friction fit between the 2 tubs and it was reusable on subsequent runs.

Aside from the gnats angle, I was also looking at getting a good seal as a way to minimize evaporation and contributing humidity to the room. The downside is that you're losing some of the benefits of the air exchange with the water.

Week 5 today I think. Sips are drinking and buds are a growing. Veg room needs a make over. Plants just growing too fast running out of room. Will send some to the worm bin. New clones are at day 6 I think so opened up the vents to help dry them out. Some shots. 220D0255-8E5D-479D-B68A-8690FB73269C.jpeg731A9E57-A8CC-420F-ABA5-0800811631F4.jpeg

I'm using a very similar setup except that I don't have that pipe. Instead I have a "fill reservoir" attached to the main rez via 1" pvc with a float valve. Working great so far. Went on an 11 day road trip and the ladies were perfect when I got back. I'm hoping roots don't clog it... we'll see.
This is purely anecdotal, but I have found that my plants respond a little better when I allow the reservoir to run dry versus having a constant supply of water. Then again, this works great until you go out of town for a week...

Normally I would agree, but I'm using a living soil and my aim is to keep the soil conditions consistent. In my case I'm kind of growing the soil and the soil is growing the plants.

Plus, as long as there is an air gap (or sufficient soil aeration), the plants will take off when their roots hit it.

If needed, the valve to the float can be turned off to allow the water level to lower too.

Did some work in the veg area. Lowered plants to the floor to make more room above. Culled a few plants. Up potted some. Will have to decide what I’ll run next, topped a few to try to keep them from stretching. Light is at 50%50057508-C43A-421F-8045-72E535A532F7.jpeg

Happy Sunday everyone. Used my shop vac to remove the sand the morning ,worked well. You can see all the roots that have grown up into it. I put down a layer of ewc spread some Gaia over the top and recovered with ewc. Mixed in then gave it a light mist. I did this to 2 of the sips. Worried I’ll burn the little roots so will weight a day or two and see before I do the others. Ill
Leave the sand off on these two.
This will help my humidity go up a little I hope. I’ve been down around 42% since adding the sand. Room temp is 75f.If you believe VPD charts I’m low.5B4A8319-99FB-4FCB-A83C-A1C6228296E3.jpegD7928759-2DA2-4093-9C7C-1D00BC661C9F.jpeg

Into week 6 now. No problems from removing sand and top dressing so went ahead and did the others. I did approx 4 tablespoons of ea veg and bloom Gaia and approx 7 cups EWC. Ea sip. Noticing some brown hairs already thinking it’s a bit early. It’s been a year since last I grew this strain so not really sure if that’s normal. All known female clones so shouldn’t be any hermits. Lol. I think I’m a little behind in size for week 6 but will see. Maybe from not keeping the sips full every day may have caused the brown. Not sure.
Smells nice and they look healthy so happy about that. Cheers. Some pics.
Shit, posted same 3 pics twice,

I have an outdoor plant that’s lived under my patio all summer. I started light deprivation on June 21. Plan was to keep it alive long enough that it may seed itself. Took a bud off last week for a test and wouldn’t ya know I found two good looking seeds. :)8BCFA7FF-738F-4839-969A-4CAE41E6693F.jpeg58BD49E2-8008-488B-B850-C1B84A06D0CA.jpeg
