Can anyone passionately and intelligently explain what Southern pride in relation to the Rebel flag

Robert E. Lee wasn't even in agreement with slavery. He only commanded the Confederate military because he felt that his allegiance was owed first to his state before his country. He was torn regarding secession. He went to West Point with Grant and was originally offered command of the unit and he spent a couple stressful, sleepless days trying to consider his options. Watch "The Civil War" by Ken Burns.
 
The Union didn't even care about slavery as strongly as they were committed to holding the secessionist states to the Union. It only became an official reason in '63 with the Emancipation Proclamation.

The confederate flag is a symbol and it is my opinion that the only power it has is from the person that displays it. I'm from the south born & raised. There are people in my area that display the confederate flag . Did their family own slaves or did they lose family members in the civil war or do they just want to thumb their nose to the people that find it offensive.The answer to that question is one I can't answer. You must know the person to know their true feelings about what the flag means to them good or bad. The flag holds no special meaning to me but I feel if someone wants to display it they should be allowed to .

i would say about as many white people down south wear the flag
or utilize it in some way. which honestly isnt that many

i dont, simply because i travel alot. most people have a skewed idea of what it represents. the thread is implying a relation to southerners ideas of the flag....i think, op was a little confusing. i dont always use proper grammar but atleast yiu know what im trying to say
 
Most southerners did not own slaves. Most confederate soldiers fought because they felt like they were being attacked and invaded (which they were). They didnt fight to defend slavery, they fought to defend their wives, children, themselves, and their property. But you idiots twist it however you want.

As someone who grew up in the mid-south, it was not very often I saw anyone with a confederate flag. It is not common at all.

Of course they do. They have a good enough reason to resent it, because the South fought to keep them enslaved, but again, at the time/historically, slavery was about money, not hatred.

I can't put a number to it but I have seen it for myself in GA and TX.

Does it make it right or wrong? Not every person that flies that flag is a racist.

I do know that, personally, I don't fly it.
