Niron magnets can replace many of the rare earth magnets used today, they are cheaply made from Iron and Nitrogen. This is a big move for the American company Niron and I would expect other auto manufacturers to do the same. So much for China's lock on rare earth magnets and battery materials will follow with new battery chemistries.

Climate fanatics seem to thing EV's are the answer...except - those batteries are made with Lithium. When they catch fire, which sometimes they do, inexplicably, they produce toxins that are FOREVER CHEMICALS!! Check out some of the issues facing Ohioans (won't go into details here). Suffice it to say that IT IS NOT THE PANACEA that they wish it to be!
 
Hybrids reflected the most at 3,475 fires per 100,000 vehicles. This is most likely because hybrids utilize two powertrains. ICE vehicles caught fire substantially less often, at 1,530 incidents per 100,000 vehicles. EV fires were significantly lower than the others, with 25 fires per 100,000 vehicles. Mar 22, 2023

Yeah and wind turbines use oil and solar panels create local temperature rise because of black box radiation and don’t get me started on child slaves mining cobalt! (ok that last one is actually pretty bad). We should continue to use fossil fuels instead cause they never catch fire and don’t destroy the environment at all! :dunce:

There are other battery chemistries than lithium and the toxicity is overstated, every year ICE vehicles leak millions of gallons of oil, transmission fluid and antifreeze into the environment. I will agree the battery technology isn't there yet for EVs and home storage, fire being one of the concerns and cold weather performance being another. Almost all current EVs are powered by first generation Li-ion batteries, future ones will have cheaper, better and safer batteries. With better batteries that don't weigh a ton and increasing solar panel efficiencies solar recharged compact cars become feasible for many living in warmer places, including most of America.

Solar is now the cheapest form of power generation and costs are expected to drop even more as efficiencies increase, we just need the cheap batteries to store it for a spell. People will do shit because it makes economic sense to do it, including driving an EV and putting solar panels on the roof. Technology drives change, the railroads replaced steam engines because diesel locomotives were cheaper to operate and maintain, after WW2 it only took a decade or so for the steamers to disappear in North America.
 
this thread isnt even about climate change anymore just ev vehicles. and people unwilling to accept they have problems sometimes because apparently accepting things have problems means its all bad forever.

If we are gonna do anything about climate change (assuming we can), it will involve changing our technology and transportation is a target for that change. Every automotive company on the planet is betting the farm for a reason and policies are constantly evolving. Changes are coming for many in the next decade in how they get their power and the kinds of cars they drive. I dunno if we can arrest the increase in greenhouse gases to preindustrial levels, but the higher we drive carbon levels the worse it will get and the faster it will get there. There is a scientific consensus that we can't keep dumping fossilized carbon into the atmosphere for energy, the oceans are acidifying as well as warming.

but there's also other aspects of climate change than 150 pages of ev vehicles, maybe you could start an EV vehicle thread so you have a place to dump all your non fossilized carbon info into! that way youre not monopolizing an entire thread over just EV vehicles !

I hadn't realized EV fires rates were so low, still flammable batteries require a heavy steel pack case, adding weight, so does a cooling system, needed for fast charging most current Li-ion batteries. There are new batteries coming that are nonflammable and don't need a cooling system, reducing the overall pack weight considerably.

Even with low flammability they would still present home fire insurance issues for home battery storage.

I do post on other aspects of climate change here, but finding a way out is as important as protesting our plight. Right now, most people are confronting two main issues on the climate front, solar power and thinking about an EV. I try to keep the focus on batteries and the plunging price of solar and the implications for both.

I've noticed activity in politics has dropped off quite a bit and I'd like to keep a thread on climate change near the top since it is an important political issue that will increase in relevance over time. We are at the beginning of an energy revolution as some people turn concerns into technology and opportunity, capitalism is good for somethings, and this is one of them.

theres a few reasons for that

the politics section was so poorly modded that people where allowed to sit here and wish death on others, dox people than print out photos of their faces and show semen on their faces and post it, shit like that was allowed here. until i took over and now we dont allow any name calling so people have no reason tosit here all day and get upset and fight over it.

Now that the negativity is gone theres no reason to sit here all day and argue and those who do and break those rules have been removed, so now politics is quieter which is evident on any social media platform.

it could be popular if people wanted discuss things without fighting non stop

Circle back to the topic at hand, this is a climate change thread not an EV thread you are monopolizing this entire thread solely about ev vehicles, you are taking it over with just ev vehicles.

I recommend to make a thread about ev vehicles for you to use so you canuse both without monopolizing one for one niche specific area of climate change.

Actually, not only do the wind turbines use oil, they are dangerous to birds and bats (the ones out in the country, east of use, eat bugs that could devastate crops - there are entire sections of counties that have voted to keep wind turbines out of their agricultural areas! You should research.

Keep the focus on climate and don't stray into international politics, people looking to take over other people's protests and message are undemocratic and don't speak for those in attendance. They are nothing more than distractions, no better than what the fossil fuel industry tries to do. There are plenty of pro-Palestinian protests, they can join them, their traditional means were hijacking airliners, now they moved on to climate change meetings. They only serve to divide the movement and fragment support, they only care about their cause and are abusing these people to their own ends by abusing their meeting and its agenda. I would be no more in favor of Ukraine doing such a thing than those wo support Israel or Palestine, it has no place in this meeting or a scientific one. Politely kick them off the stage, if it is off topic and divisive, whatever their cause, it would not be right for climate change activists to hijack one of their protest rallies either.
