With talk of "ph perfect" nutes, I was wondering if anyone is checking the ph of their run-off? There was a great post 20-30 pages back about checking ec in the run-off to monitor your feed strength. But I've noticed that coco has ph buffering effects on its own, so I'm wondering if using "ph perfect" nutes would really be counter intuitive.

I've been running some tests and here's what I'm seeing so far. I use Osmocote products for my nutes, and have been for over 3yrs. I've been running hempy buckets w/ osmocote for the last 2yrs, most of that with a coarse perlite bucket and a soil cap. I'm now on my 2nd & 3rd runs with coco hempy buckets. I started to check my run-off with my 1st coco bucket and found that my in to out ph dropped by 1.0 to 1.2, so ph in at 7.0 gave me an avg of 5.9 out. At this point I stopped adjusting the ph of my feed water (it's just water because by nutes are mixed into the coco), and the plant took off.

So this run I'm running 1 coco and 2 perlite w/ soil cap (my standard), for comparison.

I wasn't sure how much of the ph drop was due to the coco or the effects of pre-loading with OC. So to start the perlite buckets I didn't adjust the ph of the feed water. I tested overflow out the hole, and found the ph in and out were within 0.2 I ended up with a mild ph lockout during the first 7 days in the bucket. Next watering adjusted to 5.9 the out ph out was 6.0 and the ec gained 1.2 and the plants bounced back.

So with this new info I can say that using OC is ph neutral, and the coco is responsible for the ph buffering. But I'd really like to see some samples from folks using other nutes to see what the buffering effect are if any.

Some bud porn,

Headband (1st 4 pics) and purple train-wreck (last pics) - day 64. They look almost done, what do ROI folks think?

Question- has anyone growing in coco figured out an efficient way to recycle coco? At $25 bucks a bag it seems like it might be worth it if there was a good way to do it.

I think that twisted leaf is when a plant is coming out of flowering and going back into veg.

girls was cut from girls before flowering and was put under t5 24/7 for rooting. then was transfer to 4x4 rock wool under 20/4 600w mh for 2 week and finally transfer to .8 gal airpots. i hope they are ok. there no sign of yellow and root are nice and white.

looks like beginning signs of overwatering. ease up on the watering amount and let the medium dry out. get a digital moisture meter and always wait until it read under 2 before watering.

I have 3g and 5g smart pots and I have to agree. I don't see any benefit (other than watering less frequently) to the 5g pots even though my plants get up to 4.5 ft.

@Lucius - SO when I harvest, I just shake out the root ball and reuse whats left? or do I have to rinse the coco before re using? Thanks
That's the annoying part. At least for me, you really can't just shake out the root ball. I have to break it up into pieces and kind of bang them around and rub them together between my hands to separate the coco out. The roots are fully permeating the entire mass so it doesn't just shake out like soil.

Pretty much just massage it. Take the big clump out and leave the rest in. I don't wash it personally. I just flush my plants with pure water the past 10-14 days. Add a bunch of Mychorizzae to the medium as i put new plants in and let it go.

I use Sunshine Advanced #4 and add about 30% more perlite.
