It's not just about cost of the bulb, how do you dispose of your bulb? do you take them to some hazardous waste site or just toss them in the trash and they end up broken in some landfill? what happens if everyone everywhere uses everything to 1/4 of its life then tosses it? Probably be more of a polluted up world than it is right now eh?
I keep mine and eventually I'll dispose of them in a recycling facility. Keep in mind that it is also ecologically unsound to put 600w of power into an appliance that is only delivering 500 or 400 watts of output. Throw on some more coal! Maybe we should all do a light meter test on the bulbs we use so we know what we're talking about. ;-)

now you're talking!! hps for veg! Does it being "old and worn the fuck out" make the spectrum more better for veg than when it was shiny new?

I guess if your goal is to get maximum light for your plants, and be maximally conscientious, the best approach would be to find the bulb that scores high in maintaining output level over time, and is also more green and able to recycle. I think you would still be forced to trade off one for the other, but that would be the way to get the best balance. I have never seen results of such testing, and could you believe them anyway? Maybe I'll do the test myself. I say that a lot, though.

PMSL again, Using HPS in veg makes plants stretch and is a dumb idea. If using HID lighting, MH (metal halide) is the way to go.

That's rich, coming from somebody with over 500 posts and no REP. Not surprising with such witty posts as the one above. ^

Besides, I'm here to talk about weed and not to be 'liked'. LOL

days, weeks, months, years?
HID lighting bulbs can last for months to years barring manufacuring defects and overall environmental conditions such as humidity.

As a general rule, the bulbs should be changed every 6 to 9 months to ensure the brightness and quality of light being broadcast.

If that's is supposed to be any clearer, its not. Your use of the English language is a reflection of your below average IQ.

BTW .. Your use of 'your' is incorrect. The word you were after was 'you're'.

You can't even get it right when you try.
