i wanna DIY a rosin press

Hey guys after watching a thread made by a member on here i want too DIY my own rosin press
im thinking about buying a H frame 12 ton shop press and a dabpress 3x7 diy caged press plates kit but i have no idea what im doing lol im basically just putting random parts together hoping they work
the H frame 12 ton shop press im looking at costs 150 usd super cheap! and the dab press caged press plates i can buy for 270 kinda expensive but for what they do they are cheap in my book!

in total this will cost me like 400 dollars which is what a nug smasher mini would cost and that is only 2 ton?
is there anything else im missing? should i buy a different Press? please let me know :D

If it's "because you want to" - go for it.

So here's my 2 cents....That's a big rig, tall & top heavy. Got dedicated space & a base?
12 Ton is more than you'll need unless you're pressing professionally (a 4 ton is plenty IMO).
Check out Dabpress, I have one of their smaller presses, work fine & hides in the corner when not used.

thank you so much for taking the time too respond. space is not a issue i live in a big house so i can store it in my garage or in my spare bedroom or in my computer room. also you say "a base?" what do you mean a base? can you please give me a link to a good "base" i could use? sorry i dont know what other parts i need.

here is a picture that i copied that one of our members uploaded of his 20 ton harbor freight press.
im gonna send him a message and if the press im looking at is the same press in the picture(the stickers different) if it is the same press im gonna pull the trigger and buy it!

thank you for your input i might go with the 4 ton because it costs 350 usd and the one im thinking about building is 520 but it looks so awesome in the picture like imagine having that press and pressing rosin with it?

I went with dabpress caged plates, welded up a press and added a 8-ton hydraulic jack. Works great and stores easily.

He's not been around in a little bit but the change of seasons might be keeping him from posting. Yeah, I bought the plates and the ram everything else was basically just extra metal I had in my shop. It's 20" tall 15" wide and 12" deep. The caged plates and jack fit inside. Table is a mess right now.

i love it! so you put your jack inside and put the plates ontop of the jack?
and can i ask you a question? is 20 tons over kill? i just found out that harbor freight sells the same press but in 12 ton version for 100 dollars cheaper!!! so i can buy the 20 ton press for 249.99 or the 12 ton for 169.99?

I put the caged plates on the bottom. The weight of the jack puts a little preload on the springs and stays in place nicely. I've also used the 12 ton for other metalwork. It's nice it will do the job no problem. Not as big but still big and takes up a lot of room.

Your surface area is the bag size not the plate size.

just too keep everyone up to date i decided to go with a small H frame press that comes with 6ton jack and is 3ft tall.
also i went with dabpress 3x7 caged plates
in total a 6 ton DIY rosin press cost me 370 dollars
the only thing that worries me is the plates are made for 12-20ton H frame press and my press is 6ton i hope this wont be problem.
i will update this thread when i receive my Shop press / plates :)

As long as the plates fit there should be no problem. I would get a piece of steel, aluminum or wood to cushion the rod that interfaces with the top plate of the cage. This way it doesn't gouge your top plate.

With a range of 2.2" to 9.8"
this is what it says and the plates are 5.5inches tall right? so it should fit? :D im pretty sure it will fit!!! so stoked thanksfor your input man!!! also i saw you have apiece of wood for cushioning your top plate?

Yes cushion and insulation, top and bottom. No need to heat up more metal than the plates.
