Oh well. I'll live. I'd rather be owned by the government then have nothin. No matter what I decided to do, work, school, mooch...someone will have me by the balls. With a paycheck or student loans or having things I can mooch.

So why not get some training, job stability, pride, respect, and retiring at 43 doesn't sound so bad...ya I'll do some shit work, but I've got some advantages over most recruites...


A high I.Q., quick mind, passion, work ethic, drive to move up in rank and natural respect.

Pretty much how I see it...

My life is just about identical to the one you described. Have really been considering the Coast Guard, same reasons as you, I don't want to get into a war and get sent overseas, have bad credit, debt, and nothing to wake up and feel happy about. Seems like the options are pretty limited and time is quickly running out.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I have some similar questions so I thought I'd just ask em here...

I'll be turning 25 this year, the highest level of education I've completed is high school. From what I've read, pretty much everything says most jobs in the aviation field require at the minimum a BA/BS. It would probably be pretty difficult to earn a BA/BS within 4-5 years while also working the day job I'd select for 8-12 hours a day and taking classes at night, so would this totally eliminate me, even from consideration, to most of the pilot/aviation positions?

This actually leads to my other question, the education part. How does that work exactly, day job/training in the day, school on your own time when you're off at night? How long would it take someone from enlistment to earning a BA/BS? Average time frames?


How long have you been weed free Kodank? Are you in decent shape? I'd probably need to spend at least 3 months getting in shape before I signed any papers..

I feel you man. I'm thinking you'd go in and go through the schooling. You just need to plan on making a career out of it.

As far as me being in shape...I could be in better shape. Cardio isn't my weakness. It's upper body strength. I quit smoking a little over a month ago.

Maybe I'll see you on the coast guard.

hey i know you dont like me much, but i was just in my sociology class on monday, and a guy was talking about his job as military police in the army. Basically they told him that it would transfer to civilian life, he'd be able to use it out in the work world. So he did his time and did great at his job.
His enlistment ends and he comes home.
He can't get a job with his experience. Regardless of all the time he spent as military police, its almost as if he didnt do it. He's now back in school using his gi money to actually get an education and new skills that will help him pay his bills, all he could do with his army experience was go work construction until that fell out in the aftermath of the housing bubble. Guy is like in his late 20's early 30's, and while he did benefit from his military service as a person and for the stuff that veterans get, his job in the military did not help at all.
Just my 2 cents

Got two nephews. Navy. Marines. Gi bill. Pension. Bennies. I shoulda did it. They have great lives. Money. Family. All because they served a few years. They got outta here. It changed their lives. It can change yours too.

Urca: I'm not set on only military police. I haven't looked into much just yet.

Ya man. There are some really good upsides. If I join before I turn 24 I'll be retired by 44. If I make a career out of it.

The job is my top priority, I'd really like to do something inside the military that transfers over to civilian life well, as well as earn a degree while I'm in or just after I get out. I'm not sure if I'd make a career out of it, 20 years is a long time. It's 20 years minimum before you can retire will full pension right? Who really knows though, might love it..

Not gonna lie, it's going to be difficult for me to quit smoking weed..

Just hate being broke all the time, walking everywhere, wondering 'what's next..?' all the time..

The thought '...well, prison might not be so bad after all...' crossed my mind when considering turning to a life of crime recently.. Weird how the rewards outweigh the risks in certain cases. I can totally see why a person would do it. No other options...

I checked the MP, it says it transfers over to civilian PD, Detective, small arms instructor, etc. There's a sub-forum with like 10-15 of the jobs with pretty decent descriptions

Right there with you, man. Being broke is depressing. Not having something to be proud of is worse...specially when they ask me what I do and I have to say oh nothing...unemployed.


Crime? Don't do it man. It is never worth it. Fast and easy money comes with hard and slow consequences. I speak from experience. Earn what you need.

i remember when i didn't have a money or a job, people ask you if you're working and you say no... and then you feel like a worthless piece of shit.
you could always get lucky and end up working like i did (even though i'm unemployed now, but i have a nice looking savings account to help me out until the next job comes)


just consider your options before you sign up. and stay safe if you do go, wouldn't want you to end up dead.

That's the thing, man.. options are... pretty limited.. to say the least. Speaking for myself.. It comes down to a few things.. A. go get a minimum wage (most likely customer service) job and go to school, both part time, ensuring I'm stuck at community college for at least 2-3 years. B. go full time and hope/pray I can get some kind of financial aid to cover the ASTRONOMICAL expenses college costs these days (bullshit) - both of those options ensure I accrue massive debt. C. join the military, learn a set of useful skills, get paid, go to school for free, get in shape..

The way I see it is I'd be doing essentialy the same thing inside the military as I would outside the military, except inside I'd be earning more, gaining a sense of accomplishment (however small it may be it beats working a COMPLETELY MEANINGLESS minimum wage job for customers that you hate and a boss/corporation that doesn't give a fuck about you), advancing, growing/learning as a person.

The negatives I can see so far are you're constantly on a time clock, always, the entire 4-6 years you're active. You wake up when you're woken up, you go to sleep when you're told. The sacrifice is massive, but imo, at this point, it seems worth it. You give them that time, they give you an education and a financial footing to start the rest of your life with. You might even get to see the world and meet some interesting people along the way...

I have a pretty good feeling my dad is going to go through some major shit between now and 6 years from now, which is another thing to consider entirely... but even he's told me "you can't live your life according to others"...



The shit humans go through on a daily basis sometimes doesn't seem... appreciated.

wait, do you have any volunteer experience? you already said you're pretty smart.. you have a year of college.

you should send in an application for the peace corps.
it will give you tons of experience, you could try to do agriculture or some shit.

All I have is high school. High school and 6 years of continuous work experience, ain't shit really..

What is the peace corps exactly?

I'll google it, just wondering if you had any info first?
