Jebus' Indian Haze and Brazil x KC grow journal

Hi all, I'm back with another grow. I have two Indian Haze and a Brazil x KC going right now. They had a bad start and were severely stunted by heat issues but now that I have AC they are back on track.

In a few hours the Indian Hazes will wake up to their second day of flowering. They are in a homemade grow box that has four 42w 2700k cfl's and one 26w 6500k cfl. I topped them about two or three weeks ago and trained them down so they are spread out and will fill the box nicely. They have an 11 week flowering period so hopefully they don't go crazy and get too big for the box.

The Brazil x KC is coming along nicely. After I fixed the heat issue she grew in on herself which caused her side branched to start growing. Now that her stalk has thickened up the knot she tied herself in has loosened up and that main growth tip is starting to grow up again. I topped one of the side branches which took over as the main when all this happened. She is still vegging and I probably won't flower her for a few more weeks. I've been lazy in completing my second box (a 6-month work in progress) but when it's done she'll go in it. Right now she is under a 90w UFO and one 26w 6500k cfl. She hasn't grown much the last few days so I turned off the CFL (still slightly high temps around her).

So what are your temps these days?

In the box it hangs right around 85 a few inches above the tops of the Indian Haze. That may change though since I switched out the lights for flowering. From watching the temps in the past the larger lights give off less heat than the smaller ones so the temps may go down a bit. They are a pure sativa though so I think they enjoy a little heat. They bounced back much quicker than the Brazil x KC while the temps slowly started to drop. Under the UFO the temps are a little higher. I have the thermometer under the plant and it usually reads around 86 or 87. So it is probably a few degrees warmer up near the top which could be the reason the BxKC's growth has slowed down the last few days.

Once fall comes and it starts to cool down again they should be fine. I want to finish them up before it is full blown winter though. Just in case it gets too cold in the house. I had trouble last winter controlling the heat in the room (taping over the heat vent because the closing lever was busted). With the lights on it would be 85-90 (I had the UFO in the box) and with the lights off it was 55-60. Those seedlings got all screwed up. It's hard to keep temps steady in a 100 year old house.

One thing I did in winter to manage temps is take aluminum tape and totally wrap a 40-60 watt incadescent so no light leaks. Then get a light socket that screws into another light socket and turns the light on when the other lights go out, I think its called a photocell socket or something. That 60 watt bulb will keep your space nice and toasty when the lights are out, and it does not cost much at all. Better than a heater hands down.

Good idea. I'll remember to give it a shot this winter. Does it turn on when the light goes out like a night light or do you run it off of a separate timer?

A little bit of growth but no real stretching yet. Day four of flowering just ended. The preflowers have swollen a bit and the hairs are more pronounced but no major flower action yet. I figure i'll see some noticeable changes in the next few days. The BxKC is looking good. She has a nice thick trunk and I like the way the branches are keeping relatively even. I should have plenty of room in the new box for all three girls so I'll keep my electric costs down once I finish it. So I'll let her go another week and a half and then put them all in the one box so they should finish right around the same time. I should transplant her into a larger pot soon too. When I chopped the male bag seed the roots had spread around the base of the coffee can and that was after maybe a week or so after switching out of a quart yogurt cup.

One last thing. I guess I was a little off about the light size:temp idea. It was around 95-96 degrees a few hours ago so I removed the General Electric 42w cfl. It's base was the hottest out of the 5 bulbs. Then about an hour later temps were down to 89. The lights won't be on until tomorrow so I'll see how it's doing late in it's day. House temps are usually 74-77 depending on what it's like outside. So I would say the box does pretty well for keeping itself cool. I may dicker around with it some more and try the 65w cfl in place of 1 or 2 of the others. That thing is a beast.

It turns on when the lights go off, no timer needed. You do need to buy a photocell light socket though. It will screw into an existing socket and then your taped up space heater (light bulb) will screw into that

i got one of those CFL's i forget how many Watts it is maybe 150w or less i am not positive but its = to a 300w it does get very hot at the base but seems to work well if you can keep you temps in control. i got a nice 200w VitaLUME with a great blue spectrum and the plants love it. i was thinking of grabbing 2-300w VitaLUME so i could use the 200w for my clones and small veg. and have 2- 300w for vegging i like the growth it gives. even over a MH its slower than using a HID but i think the plants look better.

but i will be watching this grow show got some cool strains going. the Haze looks great gonna take a bit for her to flower!! and the KC cross sounds good most of KC's strains are great for the price, just like Mandala great genetics cheap. should be some sweet plants

These pics are from last night (day 4 of flower). Not much action but I'm going to get some new pics in just a few minutes. Glad to have you aboard Delta. That big cfl I have is 65w and is equal to a 300w incandescent. My last grow was TNR (also a KC strain). It turned out okay but I had some major heat problems and a major nitrogen deficiency towards the end so I'm sure it would have been awesome if I had it under control. I really like KC strains so far. They are very uniform from what I have seen so far. He got a bad rap around the turn of the century but has straightened out since then, and you definitely can't beat the prices. I think I paid $12 for the TNR and $17 for the KCxB.

Heat isn't too bad now. In the box it has been in the high 80's a little above the canopy but everything looks healthy. The KCxB is about 82 down at the soil so I am happy with that. I was getting a lot of heat off the UFO though so I raised it another inch. The newest growth had brown/yellow coloring the other day before I lifted it and today it was purple growth before I lifted it. There are about 4 colas at the top and the main is slowly catching up. I may top those colas to bush it out a little more and slow down the vertical growth. So far I am pretty pleased with everything.

Thanks for the info GumB. I think I know just what I'll do. I have one of those shop lights with the yellow casing. So I"ll wrap the bulb and put it in so air still can flow in and out of the small fan in the light. Then put it in the casing so I can just run it through an air intake and put it down by the pots. Then I won't need to worry about the light touching and melting anything. Are you sure there is no risk of fire from the tape being on the light?

1-5: Ashley, on the first three you can see the main cola curled around. It has a nice lush and green color, and in the fifth you can see the trunk is really getting thick. She'll need to be transplanted soon.

Marsha is showing a lot more pistils, although it's just a few, than Tia. I think she is filling out better too, but Tia is coming along great. I plan to spread out the pics more than I did on the last grow. So the next pic update will probably be in a couple of days. I watered Ashley tonight, but I plan to feed all three of them tomorrow.

That Hazeis looking great!!! do you no the flower time on her?

All the girls are doing well. Marsha is looking great. Lots of new growth and pistils popping out of both sides of each node. I adjusted the tie downs to get her more even and spread out. It will probably be the last time until I put them in the new box because they are really taking up all the space now. Tia is a little behind Marsha. There are only a few pistils on her. This may be because I super cropped a branch and it had to put its energy towards repairing it. I adjusted her tie downs also but she did not have as vigorous growth as Marsha. Again, probably due to her healing herself.

I topped the three main colas on Ashley again because she was getting close to the light and the newest growth was bleached out on all of them. The other branches growing up from the lower parts should catch up so she may end up with 6 or so colas now.

I forgot to mention I fed them a mix a Indonesian and Mexican bat guano along with some Sucunat on day 7. It was a fairly strong mix so there was a little bit of nute burn on the tips of their leaves, but it was minor. KCxB is slowing down so I think I need to transplant her soon. Marsha (Indian Haze 1) is still looking more advanced than Tia (I.H. 2), although Marsha is not in full flower yet.

Oh and if anyone was wondering about the breeder I got the Indian Haze from it is Seedman Seeds.

Hi all. I'm back with some more pics. Ashley is doing fine. There is some new growth after topping all the high tips the other day and the main cola is catching up. Her branches are very hard and strong. I tested them to see if I could LST her and I think it's possible if I take it slow. When I can move her into a box I will transplant her into a larger pot.

Tia and Marsha are both doing well also, although they are slow to really burst into flower. The branch tips are pale green which I have noticed on all my past grows when they began flowering. There are also more hairs near the tip, but only a few on most of the other nodes. They are both getting good growth with minimal stretching too. Once I get them in the new box they will really have a lot of room to spread out. All I need are some nuts and bolts to secure the exhaust fans and to build 2 carbon filters.

So I am thinking about transplanting the girls into larger pots when they go into the bigger box. Does anyone have input on this? They are 2 weeks into flower. Plus the pot they are in right now are long slender trash cans. So the soil they are in now will probably sit a good bit above the line of the new pots they would be put into. I've always heard you want the old soil line raised an inch or so above the new soil line but it may be more like 4" higher. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Don't do it, not worth it IMO. Everything I read says the plant slows or stops growing roots during flower (of course every strain is different). So if you do it with them 2 weeks into flower they may revert a little to grow their roots out and fill out the new space. Unless there is a problem currently with their soil or roots, I would let them stay there course. Hope I helped make ur decision a little easier

Thanks gumball. I knew I had heard somewhere not to do it. Makes me think I should have let them veg more though. The leaves are very small and I feel like I didn't let the roots spread enough before flowering. Oh well, live and learn. +rep for the help.
