I don't know if any of you folks caught the news about Samsung TVs recently. It turns out that if you own a Samsung TV with "voice controls", your TV is constantly listening to your conversations and sending them to third parties.

Samsung warned us all not to talk about sensitive information in front of our TVs. That had me laughing for a while.

Then it was announced that your voice is being sent over the web unencrypted.

Actually, Orwell got it wrong. There are protections against government doing this sort of shit (regardless of whether or not they are actually held to these restrictions is another matter). Corporations are driving this bus. They are not restricted from infringing our privacy at all.

Your words make it seem like there is currently a difference between corporate power and government power in this era- and that's where your logic fails.

The moment someone hears anything they think is scary coming from the voice channel of that television, they'll call the cops- and voilá! You've just been SWAT'ed by Samsung!

No warrant required; you'll just find yourself on the floor of your own living room, face down, with the muzzle of an AR-15 in your ear.

At that point, will you care about the difference?

No, I won't care about the difference. But my point remains, Orwell envisioned authority imposed from on top against our will.

What is actually happening is that the populace has begged for this (more like Farenheit or Brave New World). While the authority might come from the top, the mandate to use it and continue to use it comes from your neighbors. But they no longer have to push a button to change the channel.

I agree that the two are horribly intertwined. I expect that things like this are intentionally designed to allow spying on us rather than oversight. Too many people understand this crap to believe that security concerns didn't get raised within Samsung.

YEA One of my buddy's was about to buy samsung TV with voice controls ... plus he's was "skype" ready with camera and all ... and they told him at the store exactly what u just said and he said fuck it and bought TV without that option ... but to my knowledge all new TV's slowly but surely will come with an option like that so eventually all of us gonna own one like that ... it is just a matter of time ... the sales man said to my buddy to have voice activation TV is the best u can get right now, but if u doesn't wan't to be spy on simply don't hook up ur tv to wifi so there is no internet connection.... what is the point of having smart tv when u won't use it to the full capacity ...
plus smart tv are like big smart phones ... for government to not listen to ur conversation when u r near the phone u have to pop battery out so they won't ears drop on u... and i'm sure with those tv's it's going to be something similar... even when u don't hook up ur tv to wifi they will hack it if they want to anyways and there is nothing anyone can do about it ... well except if u r super hacker and know ur shit ... but i'm no where near that ... so peep's like me will have to deal with that ....

Dyna i'm not no thinfoil head conspiracy theory freak , but i believe that government would not allow any technology to go into a public hands what they can't keep in check and have control of ... i bumped into conversation about this subject on other forums ... it's not even government... hackers this days can hack to ur computer and see thru ur camera and hear thru ur microphone ... they hacking cellphones ... and i'm sure that is going to be matter of time when they will come up with something for tv's

Cops showed up here the other day. They said I threatened to shoot the TV, "How do you know?" The TV reported you and filed a protection order. "Its all a misunderstanding, it was really Nancy Grace I wanted to shoot". Cop gets on his smart phone, talks a bit, then says OK, TV is rescinding the PO but you can never have Nancy Grace on it again. They also let me keep my guns
