I belong to a forum that is supposed to be a peer support forum for gastroenterology problems. Instead of peer support it has deteriorated into one forum mod trying to answer the questions of a constant stream of people who pass through, ask a few questions, and leave without ever becoming a part of the community. Hence, there is no community. I'd hate to see that happen here. I know some forums where you have to be registered for 10 days or 30 days before you can make a post. I might be in favor of that.

I think you got a lot of stuck up people who have forgotten, that repetition is what created the web, if someone ask a question a million times it should be answered a million times because thats what create evolution, and to forget that is to be old. A lot of these growers are old, played out, something like a old rock band, that hate a new school sound, Hey man keep asking your questions and even go to new sites and ask that same stupid question, questions is what keep society new. There are new upstart forums all the time search them out.
The same question is always welcome by good souls, but haters are just part of life.

I've seen good helpful responses, and I've seen crappy responses. Some people just never learned "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."
I just try to help, even if not for the person who asked the question, for the trolls who just search for information and expect that a thread with an explanative title would have an answer contained within.
I was really hopeful that the thread somethin like :what human food can be used for ferts: would have good information, but it just degraded to people telling the guy he's too cheap to grow. So sad... stoners are supposed to be MacGuyvers.

OP, just think of RIU as a good sized city. With any large group of people, you're gonna have good folks and bad, helpful folks and ignorant, peaceful folks and assholes. Go to the same place in a city every day, and there will be a different group of people there every time.

I have no pity for that person. I was one of the first few to post - I meant my post to be helpful, giving him a cheap alternative to the many varied expensive nutes, commonly preferred here - and he basically called me (and a couple others)ignorant (and a few other choice words) for not telling him exactly what he wanted to hear. That's why it went to hell.

I won't help a lot of the time because 1. I'm still a newbie (only on my second grow). And 2. I've put in hundreds of hours of research to be able to grow, so when somebody comes in here with a question that shows that they haven't put in the effort to do any research - why the fuck should I tell them?

sometimes after i research i still ask the ? just to see if i get a different answer or some times info changes. but for the most part a lot of answers are there.

Sure. You can do years worth of research and still have questions that need answering, or maybe interested in other's opinions. There's a lot of info out there and there is such a thing as information overload, then on top of that you have misinformation. I understand that, I really do. But some times, with the questions posed, it's so fucking obvious that they haven't bothered with any research.
The search function is a bitch. Mainly because so many people in here can't spell for shit and won't use software like FireFox Dictionary to correct their spelling. So many threads won't turn up in the search results because the fucking idiot that made the thread didn't make sure to correct his spelling.

If you use google and simply add RIU to your search terms it WILL find the threads, I do it all the time
But I too have seen RIU change, it is a different place now compared to when I first joined, a lot of folks left Roseman, Mammoth great growers with good info always helping
But I have also seen other good growers take thier place
Folks now want instant gratification and are used to it because of how things have evolved, they get upset when it is not there
Then you have the problem of so many different ways to skin a cat with so many different opinions on which way is best or right, it does cause info overload and confuses most folks
There is no way to "fix" it it is what it is???

It looks like we've got two camps here. The reasonable camp that expects people to put some effort into solving their problems, and the babysitters who believe that you should spoon feed people the information they want. I belong firmly in the former camp. If somebody asks a question that's answered in a sticky, I'm not answering it. If it's clear they haven't made any attempt to find the answer before posting, I'm not answering it. If the person doesn't bother to make their thread at least look presentable, I'm not answering it (I'm talking about the really bad ones, not people who use English as a second language). My time is just as valuable as your time, and if you're not going to put in your own time to solve your problem, I'm not spending my time to help you.

I'm a noob. I've done it all. Read books, checked for answers to questions on the internet, and also asked the dumbest fucking questions on RIU. but remember, like I think DoeEyed said in an earlier post, it's like a city. You have different levels of growers, IQ, and age. I'm also believing that there are more and more of us everyday. More so now than ever before, so of course they're going to be elementary questions. and elementary people. I try and answer some of the dumb questions posted a million times over to other noobs just from advce i've gotten off of RIU. So as frustrating as it is, Teachers keep on teaching.
