You're losing a lot of light from those 2 sides of the grow area that arent enclosed. Grab a big ol cardboard box and paint it flat white or some of those white foamcore sheets and put them up so that the plant has its own cubicle if you will. The light will be reflected, plants will be happier...

it CAN be but a HPS bulb is more suited for flowering, for veggin you'd be looking for a MH (Metal Halide) bulb.

You'd need to get the right color spectrum though, warm white lights in the color spec of 2700k are the ones you're going to be looking for if you decide to stick with the cfl's.

By pruning do you mean Topping? FIM'ing? Cloning? The only real reason to FIM or Top is if you're short on space and want them to bush out a little more than just growin up like they normally do.

Its perfectly normal not to show sex that early, my ladies didnt show until a little over a week, and even then it was just barely.

Just for the record they do make conversion bulbs to run a MH bulb in a HPS ballast and vice versa, they may not be as effecient as full fledged HPS/MH lights but even still they work great.
