Growing Orchids

WOW i forgot about this thread I would say it's been hijacked but the owners barely around and now it's basically being hijacked from hijackings lol. But always involves orchids in some twisted way.

yeah gardening is my fav section too. we are a noticeably reserved and studious group.:eyesmoke:not a drama queen for miles around.
I know I agree 100%, Iv'e noticed the more mature ppl like to garden in general, where as the immature ones just grow weed lol jk  sorry to all the MJ only growers reading this, but I believe you need to learn to walk before you can run, go grow a green bean, then sunflower then tomatoe plant and if all three survive go buy 125$+ beans and giver go lol.

I take a bit I learn from every plant n bring it to MJ, yes I use MG organic soil I have been using MG soil since I was in first grade and I planted a god damn green bean in school the basterds started my addiction to gardening I blame the school systems lol. I have never burnt a plant using MG products and if I ever did if I kept the receipt I just send it back to the company and they fix my issue, it's right on their site they garante that it will not burn plants if used as directed or money back. So I'm tired of hearing MG soil sucks, because honestly I just think it's a bunch of newbs who don't know jack and start blaming everything from the soil to the lady bug that got in there once. Which BTW would rock, asta la vista aphids.

Sorry I had to get that off my chest I feel like if you use Miracle grow on this site your looked down upon lol, when really I think it's just a bunch of newbs who don't know how to use MG or cant grow in general.

What happened to camping lol that is very nice tho, you can bring a bit of each with you on the Orchid growers camping trip lol.

You know danny personally I think the difference between weed growers and gardeners is that gardeners have a better understanding of plants in general. Most weed growers think that marijuana is a very unique plant with very complex needs. Gardeners however recognize that weed is just one of the 100's of plants we grow around the house. It does not require hundreds of dollars In specialized fertilizers and such the industry has convinced people it does. Give me a bag of organic 10/10/10 and some good compost and I can grow most anything. (Orchids excluded) GARDENERS UNDERSTAND PLANTS AND THEIR NEEDS!!!
100% agree with you, and Orchids well Those beautiful vagina looking testicles just break every rule there is in gardening, roots take light, they live on branches to other trees lol (most) they want the constant moisture but dont want to be wet etc.. KISS wins everytime, Keep it simple stoner

Damn it pip. You may well be right. If it's any consolation I'm not wearing any underwear.
Underwear are over rated, FFFRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM

bear thats pretty freakin funny about the MG. Personally I have never used the soil but will admit to buying a few sleaves of the water soluble chit over the years. It's cheap and works fast. My maters sure seem to like it. It is however against the rules to use it for MJ. I'm not sure why but it is. I don't believe for a second that I could tell you the difference in weed grown in MG and weed grown using an expensive three part product. My taste buds just are not that good. Don't be ashamed of your using MG bear...Just stop telling people!!
:-P
Now lets get back to testicles, vagina, mushrooms, lace gloves, and a get-together. I'll bring the rolling papers and Smores makings.:dunce: Someone else better bring the weed and don't be shy!

dendrobiums are EASY. Get them at Wally world around Mother's Day. If you can snag them for $5 in the 2-3" pot, get several. from my experience, the plain jane orchid colored one is the most free flowering. Mine have blooms for 9months of the year. No blooms Dec-March.
Put them in a sunny window and feed/water with MG House Plant Food 20drops/gal..every watering. Most regular orchid food are too high in N. You want a balanced feed.

Most orchid failures are due to loving them to death. DO NOT OVER WATER. rot is a slow inevitable death. I live in a zero humidity environment and water/mist mine a couple of times a week during the winter. A little more frequently in the summer. But they should be in bright indirect light at this time.

good luck. I've given you best advice I got from a grower in HI. Miracle Grow Plant Food is the stuff.

I think it's great bear that that the post immediately following yours offers vindication. It's okay to use mg bear you just can't go blabbing it around. Hold your head high and deal with the shame. Frankly I could not afford To feed all my plans with high end fertilizers. I'm not sure a quart of fox farms is going to help me with 30 twenty foot tall rhododendrons. LOL. I have to work with 40 pound bags of sewer sludge fertilizer. ARG, I'm certain it's organic and all natural. That's why I have no qualms about pooping on certain trees and shrubs. You are right Azone, Orchids are easy its just that i suck. LOL...,

I had some tomato plants growing between the tanks of the sewage plant at a campground. They got continuously misted and did they yield. I bet I got 50lbs. That sludge is good stuff.
I do organic on all my consumptable plants.
Houseplants are different, in my eye. I'm not discounting your organics at all.
Lived where most our houseplant will prosper outdoors all year. You learn a little. Give your dendrobiums sun in the winter, mist/foliar feed a couple time a week and don't let them sit in water. Mine are almost aero/hydroponic. Pumice/rock/perlite. No organic matter in the "soil" mix. Root climbing all over the place and the plant outweigh the pots and soil 5:1, easy.
I nearly drowned my phaelinopsis before I ealized there wasn't a drain. The bark was floating and the water getting stagnant. It had an inner pot with a drain. Pulled it out. drained it and let it sun for a week to dry it. Maybe the UV killed some baddies, too. Dunno. Anyway, we were rewarded with a second bloom and is getting a stalk for this years show.

I've got a few years doing this. I have plants that are 12yrs old. I'll be glad to help you.

Miracle Gro, jacks classic, spray and grow, and Grow Moreherb food all are great for orchids. Just remember to always monitor PH and PPM and only use small amounts. For mg i keep the PPM below 300 and i never have problems with nute burn or lockout. Spray and grow helps my plants breakdown and utilize the applied nutrients. Water soluble is always better because itcan be controlled and monitored better. Soil meters are every orchid growers must have. Keep this in mind and you'll never go wrong.

I don't make that much science of it. But, do run your feed 1/2 strength at the most and use it every time. Saves needing to think about it , too. Just do it all the time. I prefer to use liquids. . I don't use special water, either. Plain old chlorinated tap water, that is very rich in calcium.

this is a pic of my "fancy" dendrobium. It blooms once a year. The blooms hold for a good while.

are they "IceCube Orchids"? I think those are fairly hardy based on one lone experience....that's the one that I floated in stagnant water and it survived.

Nepaljam.. I hate that song and video!! It was almost painful. LOL.

bear my friend I don't know about Wally World but I have actually offered pennies on the dollar for stuff out of bloom or season at the Cheapo Depot and Lowes. The manager on duty has the power to give it to you at any price he wants. I got a really nice Canadian Redbud last year for $5.00. It had to have been in an 8 or 10 gallon pot but it was the end of the season and it the last Redbud in the house and had no label or tag. I told him no one else even knew what it was so he might as well get rid of it and it worked. I stuck it out in the back 40 in a hole I had already dug. When I have no money to buy plants I dig holes to put them in when I do have money. If it takes I win big time and if it flops I lose a little.

I also purchased a SPRAWLING clematis. I have no idea what a sprawling clematis is or what it's name is but I remembered the same plant being there in the spring. It went in LATE but if it survives the winter I done good and filled another hole.

Or bear you could just put your pants on and buy it. I just tell my ball & chain that I do what I want when I want and if she has a problem with that well she can just.... Ha Ha Ha. That felt good to type but she would beat me down hard if I said it out loud!:-(

Yea we checked out Hommie depot they usually have stuff but they had some very dead mini roses in the clearance corner no orchids or anything cool, when the wife used to work there it was great, we got free seed pods and updates on the clearance plants every shift lol.

So you pre-dig holes for when you have a plant? Do you treat the hole with anything lol, cause if not then you are just creating a shitload of ankle hazards my friend, you should get yourself as metal detector and let the treasure tell you were your next plant will go, who knows the treasure in the hole may make you the money to fill it with a plant. lol

Caarreeful she's reading over your shoulder rotted, Run Forest Run!! lol I lost my pants, so I then went to shorts she took those too go swimming, so I wore boxer, she now sleeps in my boxers, so now I go in my birthday suit Fuck yea she can't take that away lol

Not only do I dig them bear I fill them with the finest turd, seaweed, fishskins and whatever if I think I might use the hole in a couple of years. I basically cold compost right in the hole. They start as a hill and just rot and settle. Short term holes just get a nice mix of compost and native soil. I put the treasure in the hole. I will admit to being frightened of my wife. I'm not a baby, I'm just smart.

I have found some good stuff at the depot so you must have done well having an "in".

This is a hole in the making. It's been draining for HOURS in the picture and I bent my mattock. ARG!! Still have not planted anything here. Need something that likes poor light and wet feet. Thats a toughy!

Thats one mighty fine wet hole you got there rotted, when you said holes I was thinking ankle breaking size but man you can trip fall in on of those and no one will find you. lol

Yeah the home depot "in" was awesome while it lasted, now it's a crap shoot for what they got.

I'm not so much frightened of her but of her reactions to the stupid comments I say, I still haven't learnt to bite my tongue i just got to call it as I see it and well that lands me in hot water more often then not. And yes I am a pussy, but you are what you eat

Poor soil, wet feet. ok, here's what i know from first hand exp that will work in those conditions:
Red Maple
Sycamore
Willow
River Birch
American Hornbeam
Green Ash
Pin Oak
Hackberry
Alders
and my personal fav...Taxodium distichum, the Bald Cypress.
then there is a small list of shrubs that can get big enough but aren't trees including:
Red Chokeberry (Aronia spp)
Clethra alnifolia
Cornus spp.(the shrubby ones)
Ilex verticilata (the deciduous hollies)
Salix spp (pussy willows)
Sambucus spp (elder)
Itea virginica
Calycanthus floridus (common sweetshrub)
best i can recolect for now...Michael Dirr's book has a shitload of wet feet loving trees. I think you have that book, right?
