get a hps/mh switchable ballast. digital ballasts will accept either bulb but if using older transformer style get one you can switch between the two. and as far as 5" the bigger the better so you can push more air thru the hood when cooling it.

cfl's and hid light are two very different things. you can't use a cfl ballast for an hps lamp

sounds like too much water for those little plants. what's your water schedule?

you could use 2 4x8 trays with 1000 watt or 2-600 watters over each tray as far as room i'd say at least 7x11 to be able to get around
