I've no doubt some people have the confederate flag as a symbol of racist sentiment. But that's really not the only reason. However, those thatfly it for other reasons are pissing into the wind, IMO.

What is a good reason to fly the rebel flag?

If it a state pride thing, why not the actual state flag? Why the one that is about a section in time where that flag was to represent a country that wished to seperate from the america that (most) will say is the greatest place on the earth.

Calling someone a racist is acceptable ... it's called having a dialogue. you can still look foolish however (as some posters have self illustrated).

Yelling epitaphs and racial slurs is not dialoguing. It's a public broadcast of ur inability to cope.

Perhaps people feel the need to respond to racial epithets because they don't agree with the characterization. After all, the epithet is not merely descriptive of race but a whole range of negative connotations which work together to diminish the equal humanity of the recipient.

Racism is a public broadcast of one's inability to cope with other races, I guess. I think you make a false distinction between two kinds of speech, one within the realm of dialogue, the other not.

re the confederate flag - My family is from PA since before the revolution so I can't really identify with the southern pride thing anymore than I can with the black pride thing. But I respect both. I know for certain that you can have southern pride and not be a racist of some sort. It also doesn't mean you think slavery was ok and you wish the south had won the civil war. The civil war was full of good people on both sides who were brave and should be honored. My take on history is that they were the victims of it (history) and the hand they were dealt.

Question for the mod:

If someone in a thread goes into full on racial hate speech in a politics thread personally directed at another individual, what would you do, and why? As distinct from people directing strong insults at you personally which you claim to absorb without whining (just banning).
