Yeah, a little of the energy is lost to heat and magnetic field generation, they're not 100% efficient. However, electronic ballasts are more efficient than magnetic ones. Magnetic ballasts are around 80%-85% efficient while electronic ballasts are often 90%+ efficient. You can do the math. :)...

The 200°K color difference isn't going to make a difference. The peak for photosynthesis is at 5500°K but I can't say it often enough, color is far less important than the quantity of light.

Sure, it's not about the type or even the amount of light but the temperature. I put mine directly under a MH after planting the sprouted seeds.

I have my 400w MH/HPS about a foot above my plants but I also hang my temp probe right at the plant tops. As long as the temp isn't too high then you're all good.
